I am blessed to be alive today, to be able to face the unprecedented challenges that face our country and our planet with hope and optimism. I am blessed to have received a first-class liberal arts and medical education, from kindergarten through graduate schools, both public and private. I am fortunate to have practiced as a surgeon and physician at a time of remarkable technological advances, and to have been able to serve those most in need, both at home and abroad.

I believe in the citizen-legislator, one who is not a career politician, making a contribution to her society. At a time when business-as-usual is no longer operative in this country, thanks to the Republican Party leadership, I believe it is time to move beyond politics-as-usual. In an era where division is a political tool, I believe in union and common ground. At a time when individuals are set apart and isolated by their innate differences, I believe in respecting all individuals by virtue of the content of their character, and harnessing that diversity for the benefit of all.

America is changing for the better. Its citizens, who are decent, tolerant people who have thrived under our secular, liberal Constitution, are taking responsibility for the country’s future. Young Americans are inspired once again after a very long drought.

As a physician-politician, as one who has been in awe of both the physical and the spiritual universe since my youth, my primary goal is to improve the quality of life by helping to bring universal, quality health care to all the residents of the state of Maryland.
